IN THE NEWS:

Report sheds light on recruiting academic medicine leaders: Among the findings of the AAMC report "Leadership Recruitment Practices in Academic Medicine: How Medical Schools and Teaching Hospitals Search for New Department Chairs and Center Directors":  the typical leadership search process takes a full year, most medical schools do not use executive search firms, and teaching hospital CEOs have become more involved in the recruitment of clinical department chairs over the past decade. www.aamc.org/opi/leadership

The new issue of the American Journal of Medicine features an APM Perspectives article on "Interim Chairs in Academic Medicine." The article discusses the increasing number of interim chairs being appointed and the roles and challenges of being an interim chair. A commentary on some of the same issues appears in the new issue of Academic Medicine.

A new publication, "The Importance and Benefits of Diverse Faculty in Academic Medicine: Implications for Recruitment, Retention, and Promotion," reports on the opportunities available to address racial and ethnic disparities in the academic medicine faculty pipeline, their career transition decisions, and explores the knowledge and tools necessary for promotion and tenure. The publication is based on the proceedings of the 2008 Diversity Research Forum convened during the AAMC's 2008 Annual Meeting.

A new issue of AAMC Analysis in Brief has been posted. This issue documents an increase in the average age of medical school faculty, a finding that holds regardless of degree, department type, rank, or demographic characteristic. These data on aging should inform a number of policy issues regarding the training, recruiting, retaining, and financing of medical school faculty.

The National Research Council of the National Academies released a new report, "Understanding Research, Science and Technology Parks: Global Best Practices." The report is a summary of a 2008 symposium on the topic. A free PDF executive summary can be downloaded from the site.  A study by the Batelle Memorial Institute reports that about 170 universities in North America have research parks, employing more than 300,000 workers.
