Drive Thru Donations to benefit children at local Family Services Shelter
WFU Domestic Violence Advocacy Center and WHCoE will be collecting baby or child-sized blankets, new or “like new” children’s books and stuffed animals which will be assembled into tote bags by Project Night Night (www.projectnightnight.org) and presented to the children of domestic violence victims at the Family Services Shelter.
The community drive will be held on Friday, October 24 from 7am – 11am at Krankie’s Coffee, 1208 Reynolda Road. The first 100 donors will receive a free 12oz coffee from Krankie’s.  The WHCOE will also be accepting donations throughout October [location].  For more information, please contact Diana Cornelison at 713-4222.

Think porn is sexy? Join this free adult discussion.  Lunch provided.
Presented by WFU Women's & Gender Studies.
Featured speakers are Professor and author Jane Caputi, from Florida Atlantic University, who will show her film The Pornography of Everyday Life as well as images of pornographic attacks on Hillary Clinton, Barrack Obama, Michelle Obama, and Sara Palin; Law Professor and author Ann Scales, from UNC-Chapel Hill, will speak on New Legal Remedies to the Harm of Pornography; and Matt Ezzell, of the Stop Porn Culture Movement, will speak on Masculinity and Pop Culture.   
 
Sex[ism], Identity and Intimacy in a Pornographic Culture: A Powerful Multi-media Presentation
October 30th, 7-9pm (Anyone 18 or older is invited to this free event)
Presented by WFU Women's & Gender Studies.
Facilitated by Dr. Gail Dines, Professor of American Studies and Women’s Studies at Wheelock College and national leader of the Stop Porn Culture Movement. In her powerful multi-media presentation, Dr. Dines uses examples from pornography, magazines, television shows, and movies to explore how femininity and masculinity are shaped by consumer-based, image driven-culture, and the ways that public images spill over into our most private worlds.

The Washington Post featured an article on the growing interest in academic public health programs and courses. The article describes how globalization and public health issues such as HIV/AIDS and pandemic flu have helped to contribute to the increase in demand for both undergraduate and graduate public health courses and made public health a "hot field." Sexist attitudes and the wage gap:  It's no secret that some people get paid more than others for doing the same job, but the reason may have less to do with employers' attitudes, than those of the employees themselves. In a new study, two researchers from the University of Florida find that men who subscribe to "traditional" (read stereotypical) ideas of gender roles make more money than their peers who have a more egalitarian mindset.  http://www.time.com/time/health/article/0,8599,1843323,00.html
