Stanford's Clayman Institute has released a major new report on dual-career academic couples. The report finds that "over 70 percent of faculty are in dual-career relationships; more than a third are partnered with another academic. This trend is particularly strong among women scientists and people in assistant professor positions." Urology Field Slowly Altered, by Women The urology rotation during my third year of medical school might best be described as a boys’ club, often characterized by infighting, one-upmanship and sexual humor. NIH has announced the availability of a Web-based tutorial related to the "Responsibility of Applicants for Promoting Objectivity in Research for which PHS Funding is Sought." In its release notice, NIH states, "As part of NIH's continuing educational efforts to improve and enhance compliance with Financial Conflict of Interest (FCOI) requirements, we developed a Web-based tutorial which reviews the requirements of and the responsibilities for compliance with these Federal FCOI regulations. The tutorial is designed for use by Institutional officials responsible for managing NIH funded grants, cooperative agreements and/or contracts and for individuals who are responsible for the design, conduct or reporting of NIH-supported research. We hope this tutorial proves to be a useful educational tool and strongly encourage all NIH-funded investigators to take it." Beloit College has posted its annual "Mindset List" for the entering college class of 2012. This is the 11th year that the Wisconsin school has assembled observations "that help to identify the experiences that have shaped the lives-and formed the mindset-of students starting their post-secondary education this fall." http://www.beloit.edu/mindset/2012.php

The Medical Education Futures Study (MEFS) has launched a new website. The mission of MEFS is to highlight the social mission of medical education during the current period of medical school expansion and potential major health care reform. It is supported by the Macy Foundation and George Washington University. Fitzhugh Mullan, MD, serves as the PI of the project. http://www.medicaleducationfutures.org

A column in Newsweek contends that "Endless red tape and paternalism toward study volunteers is having a stifling effect on clinical research." The author, Sharon Begley also contends that clinical scientists "feel like the stepchildren of biomedical research compared with the cool kids who study fruit flies." http://www.newsweek.com/id/151756

Medpedia Brings Wikipedia Model to Health, But With Pros Internet entrepreneurs are teaming with doctors, researchers and other medical professionals to create what they hope will be the Web’s largest body of health information.

 The National Institute on Aging has recently published the Clinical Research Study Investigator's Toolbox on the NIA public webpage. The purpose of the Toolbox is to provide a Web-based information repository for investigators and staff involved in clinical research. The Toolbox contains templates, sample forms, guidelines, regulations and information materials to assist investigators in the development and conduct of high quality clinical research studies. http://www.nia.nih.gov/ResearchInformation/CTtoolbox/
