Clinical Research
Why Participate in a Clinical Trial?
There are many reasons why people decide to participate. Some trials offer promising new drugs, treatments or interventions that are not yet available on the market; others may make a difference for the future and help in the discovery of new treatments.
Possible Drawbacks
New drugs or treatments may have side effects or risks that the investigators or doctors do not know about. Even if a new course of action is helpful, it may not work for you. Health insurance and managed care providers do not always cover the costs of a clinical trial.
Informed Consent-What is it?
This is a discussion of all procedures, benefits, risks and expectations of a clinical trial between the investigator and people who participate in the study. After being informed about the study and having a chance to ask questions, all participants sign an informed consent form before participating in the research.
IRB - Institutional Review Board
This is a group of people (doctors, scientists, clergy and community folks) who review all clinical trials and research studies. The IRB members do not have any personal interest in the results of the study. It is their job to make sure that the study is safe and that participants are not likely to be harmed.
Changing Your Mind!
Before and during the trial or research study, participants have the right to leave the study at any time without penalty.
Removal From Harm
Participants have the right to be taken off the study if doctors learn that a drug or treatment may harm them.
